Additional context: Due to Covid-19, my internship became a remote internship. In this article I talk about my first hand experience of being an intern during a pandemic.

Below is a story board depicting my role as an experience Design Intern in preparation for and during a typical User testing session.

• Steps of User Testing •

• Example • To the right, a UX low fidelity interaction map I laid out for our UI team to design an interactive prototype and the UX team to write a scenario script. This example is the "Educational Intro", when an individual opens their coffee machine for the first time. (Click image to enlarge)

• A few weeks before user testing • A prototype is created based on the client's design goals and scenarios are created to test whether or not a participant can easily navigate the prototype.

• 1-2 weeks before sessions • Using Google survey, my team members and I develop screener questions, then I advertised the survey to the general public, analyzed results and select around 10 people that fit the client's criteria (such as, knowledge about the topic and/or having a similar product at home/work).

I schedule in person sessions for selected participants and create participant profiles (summary of their survey responses) for the team to quickly review prior to each session.

 (my favorite part)

• After all of the sessions are completed • The research team creates common themes using key findings from all sessions. I listen and share my observations with team. These themes could be positive or negative, but are ultimately used to help the design team improve the user experience on the next prototype iteration.

My team and I use these themes to write a Findings Report. I help by writing concise topic themes and insights, review session recordings to find quotes to support these insights, and create a list of suggestions that will ultimately be reviewed by the client and implemented by the design team for the next prototype iteration.

Currently NDA there for client specifics details are removed.

• Day of a session •  Before the participant arrives, I set up recording devices. During testing I intensely listen to the conversation and capture both the spoken and unspoken, desires, challenges, needs and unmet needs. The proctor's role is to guide the participant through the scenarios and encourage them to verbalized their thought process.

• Immediately after each session • The research team (and occasionally the client) talk about and transcribe their immediate thoughts to help highlight key unique take aways from each session.
